The New York Times & Grey Group · 2013–2017 · Case study 05
Motion design, where the work started
Before I defined products I made them, frame by frame. This is the earliest work on the site: display and campaign animation for some of New York’s biggest brands, and the studios that produced it.

- Senior Motion Designer, The New York Times; Studio Manager, Digital, Grey Group
- What I owned

- Outcome
- Delivery times down 25% across 50+ campaigns at Grey
Situation
Between 2013 and 2017 I worked in New York’s digital studios: first as Senior Motion Designer in the marketing creative services group at The New York Times, then running the digital studio at Grey Group, with agency work at mcgarrybowen and Atmosphere Proximity BBDO. Display advertising was moving off Flash while the creative got more ambitious, so the studios making it had to retool without missing deliveries.
The reel
The reel above samples the display and campaign work from that period: brand animation for Ally Bank, a summer campaign for Pringles, animation and feasibility consultation for the Whitney Museum’s Stuart Davis exhibition, and art direction and copywriting on The New York Times’s 2014 election subscription campaign.
At The New York Times
I produced data-driven motion campaigns and event animation for the paper’s marketing group, work seen by more than a million subscribers, partnering with editorial, product and engineering teams. I also reworked how the Events team captured and distributed video, which brought its costs down.
At Grey Group
I managed the digital studio: hiring and running the team, directing its transition from Flash to HTML5, and building its VR practice. Delivery times came down 25% across more than 50 campaigns.
Why this is still here
It is the earliest work on the site and the foundation for the rest of it. I moved from making the work to defining it, but the making came first: when I judge whether a product is feasible or whether its craft holds up, this is where that judgement was trained.
